Wendy Williams thinks Ariana Grande will forever look 12, Arianas fans revolt
I know I’m probably going to get crap for this, but I kind of hate-respect Wendy Williams. Like, she’s brash, she’s a conspiracy theorist, she loves really dirty gossip and she’s rude as hell. I guess I can take her in small doses, but then again, I never watch her show other than a few clips here and there if she’s taking on some controversial gossip story. Like, I still think people should give props to Wendy for how she analyzed the Beyonce-Solange-Jay-Z story last year following the video of Solange attempting to give her brother-in-law a beatdown. Wendy’s analysis became what is generally regarded to be the most all-encompassing theory of “why” it happened.
So I guess I sort of hate-respect the fact that Wendy is taking on Ariana Grande and Grande’s cadre of super-fans. Wendy has had sh-t to say about Grande before, stuff about Grande’s relationship with Big Sean and stuff about the donut-shop fiasco from last month. What’s weird is that – as I go back and look at those older clips – Wendy spent a lot of time defending Ariana and humanizing her. But during a show late last week, Wendy threw some shade… sort of… on Ariana. I hesitate to call this “body shaming” because I’m not really sure?
Safe to say Wendy Williams has landed herself in hot water with a number of Ariana Grande’s fans. The 51-year-old talk show host found herself on the receiving end of rampant criticism after she made a few controversial comments about Ariana Grande and seemingly body-shamed the 22-year-old pop star on The Wendy Williams Show.
“She’s 21. She’ll forever look 12,” Williams said as the audience laughed. “And I don’t mean that in a good way. It’s nice to look younger than you are, but when you look too young and then you’re short—she’s only like 4’11”. I don’t look at her as, like, a woman.”
Her comments prompted the hashtag #CancelWendyWilliams to trend on Twitter on Thursday evening as fans of Grande banned together to try and get the show taken off air.
Is this body-shaming though? It seems like it’s its own special thing, like YoungFace-shaming. And while Ariana can’t help the way she looks and she can’t help having a very young-looking face, it doesn’t feel like saying that out loud is “shaming.” Here’s the thing: Wendy’s not wrong. Since I do a lot of the writing about Ariana around here, I’m always looking through photos and editing photos of Ariana from casual settings, red carpets, her social media and stage performances. And let me tell you… she DOES look 12 years old. I always feel like I have to be careful about which photos to post because in some pics, she looks like a heavily-sexualized tween. We used to have a similar problem with Selena Gomez too, because she’s another baby-faced young woman and it feels gross to post photos of her with her business hanging out.
But it’s good to know that Ariana’s super-fans are losing their minds. Seriously, who chooses Angsty Baby over all the other divas these days?
