Paul Henreid was an Austrian and American actor, director, producer, and writer. His roles include the films Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939), Night Train to Munich, Casablanca, Now, Voyager; Between Two Worlds, The Conspirators, Devotion, Of Human Bondage, Deception (1946), Thief of Damascus, Meet Me in Las Vegas, and Exorcist II: The Heretic. He directed the films For Men Only, A Woman’s Devotion, both of which he also starred in; Live Fast, Die Young; Girls on the Loose, Dead Ringer, and Ballad in Blue, the last of which he also co-wrote. He also directed episodes of television’s The Californians, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and The Big Valley.
He was the son of Maria/Marie Luise/Aloisia Heilig von Heiligen (Lendecke) and Baron Karl/Carl Alfons/Alphons Hirsch/Hernried, a banker, who was a financial advisor to Emperor Franz Josef.
Paul’s father was born in Vienna, to a Jewish family. Paul’s mother was possibly of non-Jewish Austrian descent. Paul moved to England during the 1930s, and later lived in the U.S. as well. Paul was married to Elizabeth Camilla Julia “Lisl” Glück, until his death. Lisl was also of Austrian origin, with Jewish heritage. They had two children, who were adopted. He was a U.S. and British citizen.
Paul’s paternal grandfather was Emil Hirsch/Hernried (the son of Max Hirsch and Leonore Michel). Emil was born in Nitra, Slovakia.
Paul’s paternal grandmother was Laura Karoline Schefteles (the daughter of Baruch Schefteles and Rosalia Rosenberg). Laura was born in Prague. Baruch was the son of Markus Moritz Beer Schefteles and Elisabeth Steseles. Rosalia was the daughter of Abraham Rosenberg.
Paul’s maternal grandfather was named Otto Lendecke.
Paul’s maternal grandmother was named Maria Karoline Hailig.
