Halsey Speaks Up in Response to BuzzFeed Article
Halsey has always been very vocal and expressive. She is an open book when it comes to her past, emotions and sexuality. However, when someone states she’s “backing off” of being herself, in terms of her identification as bisexual, that isn’t something she’ll take lightly.
This morning, the Badlands artist spoke up against a recent BuzzFeed article primarily focusing on her. The article, entitled “Why Queer Female Pop Stars Never Win,” mentions Halsey, her celebrity status and her sexuality. It begins by explaining how during past performances, she kissed women in the audience. It moves on to mention her music videos, bringing up same-sex romances, or lack thereof in BuzzFeed’s case. Touching on her song lyrics, it states she’d use male pronouns or none at all.
“There’s a chance she might feel internal or external pressure to keep her songs appealing to a broad base.”
The article dissects Halsey’s life, general and social, as well as her performances. It says her outfit for her VMA’s performance with The Chainsmokers was “one of her most traditionally feminine picks: sparkly white bell bottoms and a tiny matching crop top showing a peek of underboob.” The article says in previous performances, she mixes femininity with hints of masculinity and androgyny “in a way she’s perfected.”
The author of the article says these aspects of her life raise “complicated questions about her constructed identity.” Is she “a one-of-the-boys kind of girl” or a “classic Lez Bro?”
In conclusion, the BuzzFeed piece expresses that Halsey’s priority of battling heteronormativity is fading away. The industry pressures her to act more straight and suppresses her sexuality as she grows in popularity. But Halsey’s response to it all? Not impressed.

In her Twitter rant, she says the article “is part of a mentality so engrained in the erasure of bisexual ‘credibility’ even within the lgbt community.” Halsey is about being expressive and being herself. She shows that she is bisexual and she does exist, while acting as a role model for many of her young fans. She calls out BuzzFeed, saying this is a “tiresome analysis of my 1 year in the public eye and the ignorance of 8+ years of sexual discovery to determine if I’m truly queer.”
