Ghanaian-Canadian Lego Sculptor Ekow Nimako Makes Global Waves with His Art
Ekow Nimako is a 42-year-old Ghanaian Canadian.
He is an artist who sees Lego as something more than just a toy for kids.
In a recent interview with CNN, Ekow Nimako said, “I’m making art. This is fine art. It’s not a hobby. It’s not a toy, it’s not part of the Lego fandom, it’s not goofy. It doesn’t fall into a lot of categories that Lego creations fall into.”
Some of the sculptures built by the talented artist include a trickster deity in the form of a spider, a flower girl holding a giant bee and a Ghanaian kingdom in the year 3020.
Ekow’s Lego sculptures started in 2012. However, everything changed in 2014 when he received a grant to exhibit his artwork in Canada during Black History Month.
“I started realizing that not only did I enjoy making art with Lego,” said Ekow. “It was important that I made black art specifically.”
Ekow Nimako uses black Lego bricks.
“The beings I create are unequivocally Black. Despite their features or what I may do with them, they’ll always be regarded as Black,” he said.
It takes between 50 to 800 hours to make each sculpture and he is never in a rush.

The artist expects that the building process could become longer with each artwork as he discovers more Lego pieces and tries new techniques to make his artworks more dynamic.
“It’s a constant process of evolution,” he said.
