Dabney Wharton Coleman was born in Austin, Texas on January 3, 1932, to parents Mary Wharton and Melvin Randolph Coleman. As he was popular among young boys of his day, Dabney was fascinated by the military. Therefore, in 1949, he joined the Virginia Military Institute before gaining admission to the University of Texas, where he earned his law degree. In 1953, he was finally drafted into the United States Army. He served in Europe during his service.
Dabney’s acting career began in the 1960s after he trained from 1958 to 1960 under Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre, New York. His first film roles were with The Thin Wire (1965) and Downhill Racer (1969). He then appeared on television with a role in That Girl (1966).
Dabney started getting character acting roles around the 1970s. He appeared in Cinderella Freedom (1973) Hell Inferno (1974), Bite the Bullet (1975) Halfway (1976), Mary Hartman ( 1976) and Fernwood Tonight (1977).
